The party in the Ashanti Region has come under a series of criticisms for conducting primaries in these constituencies after injunctions were secured by some aggrieved persons to stall the process.

Explaining the position of the party with respect to these calls, Chairman Wontumi explained that, as the leader of the party and the rightful person to receive injunctions on behalf of the party, he had not received any such order calling for the processes to be halted.

Chairman Wontumi noted that with recourse to the party’s constitution where internal elections can be organized in the absence of the Electoral Commission, the party took a decision for personnel to be dispatched to the said constituencies to organize the primaries.

“When it comes to the Ashanti Region, it’s Chairman Wontumi, Bernard Antwi Boasiako who has been made the party’s servant. So if somebody wants to serve the party [with a court injunction], it’s me who is supposed to be served. From the beginning of the whole issue, nobody can ever say he has served me. My executives and I believe in the rules of the country,” he further stated.

He concluded that “it is an NPP Election. We are not in normal times. The whole of the Ashanti Region was going to vote in electoral areas. The Electoral Commission that was supposed to bring personnel to supervise the elections refused to come. Since it’s an NPP election, according to the constitution of the party if the Electoral Commission refuses to come, we can still go ahead and conduct our elections. This is not a national election. So based on the party’s constitution, nothing bad has happened.”
