Meet Beckie Johnz, A Female R&B Artiste to Look Out For

Those three words, Talented, Lovely, Modest, aptly characterize singer / songwriter Beckie Johnz. Born in Ethiopia, and mostly raised in Kenya, she came to Australia in 2005 at the age of 15. Beckie grew up in a Christian family in her early twenties, whereby she went to church and performed in a chorus. Beckie looked up to her chorus masters and while she was shy as a child, this gave her the courage to use her God-given talent to pursue a music industry career. Beckie started singing at a very young age when members of her family did not support her.

Beckie always held in her mind once she arrived in Australia that if she was to be approached with the opportunity to follow her dream she would always take the chance. Growing up, Beckie was always influenced by music icons like Nyankol Mathiang Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, usher Raymond, Alicia Keys and Toni Braxton, Keysha cole as well as the Destiny girls. She says, “I used to sing while playing with my friends at a young age, but as soon as I got home I’d stop because my cousins would make fun of me saying, ‘You’re a girl you shouldn’t sing.’ Beckie began to take singing more seriously at the age of 13 although she was a very shy girl. Over the years she started to get more out of her shell by letting her be driven by the songs. Beckie Johnz talks alot about her growing vulnerability.
