The government of Zimbabwe has apologised to a Kenyan traveller and influencer after immigration officials tried to extort her.
The Kenyan national who goes by the name African Tigress recently visited Zimbabwe for tourism. However, some officials at the Robert Mugabe International Airpost seemed not to believe that a black African can be a tourist and tried to extort her. They threatened her with deportation unless she gave them “something” and only allowed her into the country after she stood her ground.
Following her terrible experience at the hands of the immigration officials, African Tigress made a video narrating her ordeal and shared it on Youtube. The video was subsequently picked up on Zimbabwe social media and quickly went viral.
African Tigress’s video soon attracted the attention of government officials who responded quickly. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage issued a statement apologising to the Kenyan influencer. The Ministry promised to launch a full investigation into the incident. The government warned that any immigration officers found guilty of wrongdoing will be dealt with.
Below is the full statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage on African Tigress’ experience:
STATEMENT REGARDING THE COMPLAINT MADE BY “THE AFRICAN TIGRESS” AGAINST IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS AT THE ROBERT GABRIEL MUGABE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has taken note of a viral video on social media, by a fellow African sister, who goes by the name African Tigress under the Twitter handle @kenyansista.
The lady recounted her alleged traumatic experiences as she sought to enter Zimbabwe through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Immigration officials are alleged to have attempted to extort money from the visiting foreign national.
The alleged bribery attempts by Immigration officials are not only deplorable but out of sync with the expected ethical conduct by staff manning our Ports of Entry and Exit.
The alleged unprofessional and criminal conduct by Immigration officials does not reflect our attitudes and decorum as a nation towards our visitors.
Traditionally, Zimbabweans are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness to visitors.
We take this opportunity to advise the nation that investigations are currently underway to ascertain the facts and anyone caught on the wrong side of the law will be dealt with accordingly. The nation will be kept abreast of developments.
We sincerely apologise for the ordeal that our fellow sister was subjected to.
We also take this opportunity to reaffirm our Zero Tolerance for corruption.
African Tigress welcomed the statement from the government of Zimbabwe and responded by saying
